Nina
These stupid galas are so tedious, I thought to myself as I smiled politely as another rich asshole bragged to the group about his new yacht. Why canât people just write a check without needing to come to a boring event first?
I found myself wishing James were here, then immediately felt a stab of guilt. I really needed to come clean about who I was. The longer I waited, the worse it was.
After so many years of dating guys with ulterior motives it had been refreshing to be poor little cleaning lady Nina with James instead of billionaire CEO Nina. With every guy I had dated over the last twenty plus years there was always some issue with money that got in the way of a real relationship.....showing me off like a trophy, trying to get me to invest in âthe opportunity of the centuryâ, feeling threatened that my wealth was more than theirs.
It was so frustrating dealing with fragile male egos. In fact, I had barely dated at all the last ten years because of it.
I had to tell James. I was falling for him. But part of me just did not want to see James look at me differently when he found out who I really was. And somehow, I knew he would. They all did.
I was standing at the far edge of the ballroom with my brother taking a breather. We both needed to get away from the crowd and take a breatherâpeople had been talking to us non-stop all night. I felt a prickle of awareness and the hairs on my neck rose right before I heard Jamesâ angry voice.
âNina? Youâre Nina Jimenez? What the hell?â
Fuck. Somehow it never crossed my mind that James would be here tonight. But of course he was, every wealthy person in the entire city was here. No wonder he had not argued when I told him I could not see him tonight. I had a bad feeling about this.
âOh. Hi James,â I said lamely, turning to face the music. My spine stiffened and I raised my chin, refusing to be bowed even though I knew I was in the wrong. âHowâs it going?â
His eyes were burning with anger and hurt. âYou lied to me,â he accused. âHow could you?â
My brother Juan stiffened next to me. âWho is this guy Nina?â he asked protectively. I ignored him.
James didnât spare him a glance as he held my eyes, his blue eyes icy. âArenât you going to say anything?â he asked, his voice gravelly with emotion. âArenât you going to explain why you lied Miss CEO?â
âIâm sorry James, I didnât mean to lie to you.â I paused, gathering my thoughts. I was not prepared for this conversation to happen. Not yet. And not here.
âYet you did.â A red flush was rising up Jamesâ neck and his hands were clenched into fists at his side. I noted idly that he looked devastatingly handsome in his black tuxedo, then returned my attention to the matter at hand.
